American Chestnut Restoration Project

MLLT is excited to announce our first community project! We have partnered with Woodland Elementary School in Baileyville, Maine, to plant 120 native American Chestnut and blight-resistant hybrid Chestnut saplings on our property. Our project is part of a larger initiative to restore the American Chestnut to its native range in the eastern United States. The portion of our property where we will plant the saplings is in an area that was heavily forested in the early 1990s, making this an ideal location for improving our land. We are working under the guidance of Brittany Mauricette, a licensed forester, to ensure the project’s success.

Students from grades 3-6 will be directly involved in the planting and monitoring of the trees, while the younger grades will participate in age-appropriate learning activities aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The students, staff and volunteers will be involved in every step of the project, including but not limited to:

  • Understanding the genetic differences between the three types of American Chestnut and blight-resistant hybrid saplings used in the project

  • Site preparation and planting of the trees

  • Monitoring tree growth and development, pest management, and general health

  • Real time data collection and analysis, graphing, and reporting

  • All students involved in the project will be able to tag the trees they plant – think how exciting that will be for those students as they watch the trees grow along with them over the years!

You can help us with this exciting opportunity in several ways!

  1. Donate to this project or buy a tree through Donor Box!

Buy a tree for $100, and your name will be written on a metal tag to be attached permanently to the tree. You can buy a tree “In Memory Of (IMO)” or “In Honor Of (IHO)” – just indicate your preference in DonorBox or on your check.

  2. Send a check in support of the MLLT ACRP (American Chestnut Restoration Project) and send to: PO Box 298, Calais, ME 04619. Please include a note if you would like your donation in honor or memoriam.

  3. VOLUNTEER to help plant the saplings – this is a community effort! Just send us an email at MLLT@meddybemps.org

We are also very excited to announce that a generous sponsor will match all donations dollar for dollar, for the first $2,500 donated. Give today to double your donation!
